Description
This is a photograph of an abandoned church, with a nameplate of Fleetwood. The building itself is on private property in Brandy Station, Virginia. It is very near the historic Graffiti House, which is also a museum. The building fascinates me but I can find very little information about the church.
"According to a forward in a Fleetwood Methodist Church cookbook from the 1960s, Daniel Wine originally donated the land on Fleetwood Farm for the new church. It notes that parishioners completed construction in 1880 and recorded a deed in the Culpeper County Court House on Aug. 6, 1881." Source: Culpeper Star-Exponent
Nearby Fleetwood Hill is the high ground about a mile northeast of Brandy Station which became the center of a series of violent cavalry charges and counter-charges during the Civil War battle on June 9, 1863.
Brandy Station was a strategic location and a junction of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, and of roads leading to Kelly's Ford and Beverly's Ford on the Rappahannock River. Fleetwood Hill provided high ground suitable for both observation and a defensive position.
After the First Battle of Manassas, fought July 21, 1861, Confederate casualties were evacuated by train, and Brandy Station became a hospital site.
During the most prominent of the various battles fought at Brandy Station on June 9, 1863, Robert E. Lee and Ewell observed part of the action, including a Federal cavalry charge that almost made it to the house.
