An abandoned house is falling into ruins. Eastern Shore Virginia.
On the left side of the road into the town of Cape Charles is an old warehouse that has been sitting empty for years. In the course of exploring the old warehouse for photo opportunities, I spotted two old farm houses nearby...the appeared to have been empty for years. Both houses still had some furniture and other household objects inside...as if the people had just walked out and meant to come back some day. There are many such places scattered around this country and every single one of them calls at me to stop, explore, and consider who had once lived in these places and why they had left.
The Eastern Shore of Virginia consists of two counties, Accomack and Northampton, on the Atlantic coast of the state of Virginia in the United States. The 70-mile long region is part of the Delmarva Peninsula and is separated from the rest of Virginia by the Chesapeake Bay. Eastern shore of Virginia is the VA in Delmarva, and is often overlooked when people talk about the area.
The Eastern Shore, geographically removed from the rest of Virginia, has had a unique history of settlement and development influenced by agriculture, fishing, tourism and the Pennsylvania Railroad. William G. Thomas describes the Eastern Shore during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century as "a highly complex and interdependent landscape." He continues: "It was a liminal place, a zone of interpenetration, where the settlement patterns, speech, demography, and political outcomes defined its place in the South but its engagement with technology and rapid transformation of the landscape betrayed other allegiances, motives, forces, and effects."
