Description
If you want to make a roughly 50-mile detour driving between Moab and Monument Valley in Utah, you can visit Natural Bridges National Monument, Utah’s first National Monument. Not only is it a longer route, it’s also a slower drive. I had the afternoon to make the drive so I thought it would be no problem. I was almost to the entrance when traffic was reduced to one lane for road paving. It was one of those long areas of construction where you have to wait for the ‘guide vehicle’ to lead the waiting cars to the other end, where it then guides cars back in the opposite direction. The flag woman told me the wait would be 20-30 minutes! But I was too far committed to back out, so I just waited. When I started driving around Bridge View Drive, I instantly wished to have that 20-30 minutes back! The first turnout gave this view of White Canyon. If you had been here 260 million years ago, you would be on a white sand beach, the shoreline of the sea covering eastern Utah. Over time, the water spread and receded, leaving layers of sand, silt, and mud. Then plates started colliding beneath the surface to push the layers upward in a slow uplift process. After that, it only took the Colorado River and its streams to cut into the high plateau to give the winding canyons of today. So much for the white sandy beach! Natural Bridges was established as a National Monument by Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. We should be mindful today that our actions in preserving the environment today will, like this example, be around for people to enjoy a century or more from now.
